Cody Johnson released his version of this song this year, and it’s amazing…but we can’t forget about the OGs…let’s go back to 2002 when The Chicks released “Travelin' Soldier.”
And actually, they aren’t technically the “OGs” - Ty England is, he released his version back in 1999, and it’s great, but when The Chicks recorded their version, that’s when the song really blew up.
The song is about a high school girl and her love for a departing soldier, ending with the news of his tragic death overseas. The song reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles Chart, and critics argue that this song is one of the most powerful anti-war songs ever to top the country charts - because it was charting just a few weeks before the US invasion of Iraq.
