Today In Country Music: Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" Was Not About Lesbians

Mornings With KP

Monday, December 15, 2025 - 2 minutes

Hey, let’s go back to 2014, when a lot of people thought this song was actually about having a crush on a girl...

“Girl Crush” was one of the most talked-about country singles of the late 2000s. Little Big Town topped the country singles chart for 13 weeks, although some radio stations pulled the song from their rotation for just a brief moment after controversies stirred that the song was about being a lesbian.

Side note, there is nothing wrong with being a lesbian, but at the time, the world didn’t view same sex relationships with acceptance or kindness. The song was actually about jealousy and heartbreak, told from the perspective of a woman so obsessed with her ex’s new partner that she envies her in every way.

Little Big Town says they never set out to write a scandal–just a really good heartbreak song - they did it.
