Today in Country Music: Johnny Cash Performs A Benefit Show In Winchester, Virginia
Mornings with KP
Wednesday, October 22, 2025 - 2 minutes
Going back to October 22 of 1988 - Johnny Cash performed at a benefit show for a drug and alcohol treatment community for adolescents and their families at the Handley High School Auditorium in Winchester, Virginia
Before the show Cash was presented with a plaque and told that the day had been declared Johnny Cash Day.
This school was chosen because it could host a benefit show with a direct community impact, and Cash was known for using his fame to support social causes and charitable events. It wasn’t part of a regular tour stop for commercial reasons—it was more about philanthropy and raising awareness/funds.
