Let’s go back to 1980 when Dolly Parton starred in one of the biggest movies of the decade, “9 to 5.”
Starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin - they worked together in the movie to take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss - the film was a feminist-leaning comedy which centered around workplace inequality. Dolly actually wrote the song “9 to 5” specifically for the movie, which became an anthem for working-class Americans, especially women.
Nine to Five didn’t just make Dolly Parton a movie star, it expanded her image beyond country music, proving she could dominate film, pop charts, and cultural moments. The film grossed over $100 million and was one of the highest-grossing films of 1980, which was really impressive for a comedy led by women.
