Going back to November 18, 2005 – The Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line, was released, starring Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix as June and Johnny Cash
The film was largely based on Jonny Cash’s autobiographies “Man in Black and Cash: The Autobiography,” and before they both passed in 2003, Johnny and June Cash personally approved Reese and Joaquin to play their characters
The director, James Mangold, spent years refining the script and interviewing family members to capture a real look at Cash’s addictions and personal struggles. The cast was so dedicated to the film that Joaquin stayed in character most of the time to help convey the emotional depth. Reese Witherspoon trained with vocal coaches for months to replicate June's vocal style, and all of the songs were performed live on set rather than lip-syncing.
Many scenes—like the famous Folsom Prison performance—were filmed in real locations to retain authenticity.
