Today In Country Music: Radio Stations Refused To Play Loretta Lynn's Controversial Song "Rated X"

2 minutes | Tuesday, November 25, 2025

Going back to November of 1972 – Loretta Lynn made history with her controversial song “Rated X”

Loretta made a career out of saying things no one else would, she never held back the truth, which sometimes got her in trouble, but that’s why so many fans loved and respected her. “Rated X” was released the year prior to her winning Entertainer of the Year at the CMAs, she was the first female to win that award ever, and originally, the song was banned from country radio because it didn’t sit well with radio station managers.

Loretta addressed divorce and the double standards that men and women faced at the time, which made people uncomfortable. In the 70s, people didn’t want to talk about topics like this. A lot of radio stations banned the song before they even heard it because of the title, “Rated X.” Now, once the single started picking up steam, country radio picked it up because it was obvious people really wanted to hear it.
