Gilbert McLean is widely known in the Cayman community. He has had a long and varied professional career, starting first as a teacher in the government system. Upon leaving the teaching profession he entered the Administration of Government as Training Officer.
From this point onward, after a series of studies which included Organization and Methods and Public Administration he served in various positions in the government service. He has held the offices of Assistant Secretary; Senior Assistant Secretary; District Commissioner for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman; and Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Aviation and Trade. He resigned the latter job to become self employed, offering consultancy service in Civic and Government Affairs for several years prior to entering the world of politics.
He also left his mark in this field, serving for twelve years as a Legislator, the last years of which he served as a Cabinet Minister, with responsibility for Health, Agriculture, Aviation, District Administration and Works.
Since 2005 he has been enjoying a life of semi-retirement. He has remained involved in processes of social and political change including resource commentary in the recent constitutional review.
Most recently he stood as a candidate in the district of Bodden Town in the 2009 General Election.
